snow

We got hit... hard.  Mother Nature really is a prankster.  I just sent an email to the HOA because so far all they have managed to do with snow removal is pile it up in such a way that getting out from out condo tomorrow will be impossible.  The other units have a chance but with ours being in the corner they have essentially blocked us in.  Hopefully they have a plan for resolving that before 6:30am tomorrow when B and I both need to be thinking about getting headed to work.  I hate snow.

B's first attempt at snow removal

27 weeks

How far along: 27 weeks - hello third trimester!

Size of baby: About the size of a rutabaga; still measuring between 13.6 and 14.8 inches and weighing between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds

Total Weight Gain/Loss: still a few pounds up from my pre-pregnancy weight

How I'm Changing: still having pretty dry skin - and the bump is ever growing

Maternity Clothes:  nothing new this week - just trying to rotate through my limited wardrobe but getting to the point where I just don't care if I wear the same thing every week

Gender: baby boy

Movements: lots of kicks/head butts - he is quite the active little boy :-)

Sleep: still waking up several times a night to adjust my position and get comfortable but the snoogle is really helping keep me comfortable

Symptoms:  more back pain this week - I'm blaming the extra standing at work

How I'm feeling: tired... very tired

What I Miss: nothing new... red wine, sushi

Cravings: nothing specific

Best Moment(s) of the Week: This was not a great week... worked way too much and got home way too late everyday.  That said, when I got home from work Friday (2 hours after I wanted to be home) B told me to look in the freezer and what did I see???

Yes those pictures tell the truth -- he found me Jeni's Queen City Cayenne ice cream all the way out here in MA.  This place is one of my favorite spots in Columbus and we went there frequently when I was living there completing residency training.  The flavors are all so awesome but no matter what else I might have wanted to try I always made sure to get a scoop of this delicious chocolate delight.  It is like the smoothest, richest chocolate ice cream with just enough cayenne to make your mouth/throat tingle.  It's cold and sweet and spicy and just about the best thing that you can imagine.  We had been looking online at how to get it shipped but the shipping was more than the cost of the ice cream so that seemed a little silly.  Apparently in B's search he found a way to locate stores that carry Jeni's products and he found one a couple of town's over and Friday he went and bought two pints for me.  I was so excited I jumped up and down in the kitchen.

Well after that excitement we went to the grocery store and got stuff to make salmon for dinner and then we came home and tried our hand at sous vide salmon... by the time we ate dinner and cleaned up it was already 9pm and I was exhausted.  We tried to stay up to watch an episode of Good Eats off the DVR but I fell asleep and when B woke me up we went upstairs and it wasn't until after I'd brushed my teeth that I realized I didn't even get to eat any of my ice cream :-( sadness.  Nevertheless, Saturday I waited until a respectable 1:30pm and broke into it and it was just as good as I had remembered!  I had to use a lot of restraint to not just eat a whole pint in one sitting.  So, as you can see by my long discussion of this ice cream -- this gift from my wonderful husband was the best thing this week.  And I'm pretty sure baby boy liked it too :-)

What I am Looking Forward To: I am excited to be in the third trimester.  I feel like I have a lot to do still but I'm getting the baby stuff washed today and hopefully will get the pediatrician situation sorted out within the next week or so.  I also need to start calling the nanny candidates on my list.  And I need to get thank you notes out to everyone for all the amazing gifts we have received!  It is going to be a busy 13 more weeks I think.

26 weeks

How far along: 26 weeks

Size of baby: About the size of a head of lettuce; still measuring between 13.6 and 14.8 inches and weighing between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds

Total Weight Gain/Loss: a couple pounds up from my pre-pregnancy weight this week - probably can blame some of the faster than desired weight gain on the muffins I bought at costco... oh well - still on track for <20 lbs total gained

How I'm Changing: still having pretty dry skin - probably due as much to winter as to pregnancy

Maternity Clothes:  nothing new this week - just trying to rotate through my limited wardrobe but getting to the point where I just don't care if I wear the same thing every week

25w1d - pretty sure I wear this shirt at least once a week
Gender: baby boy

Movements: lots of kicks/head butts - he is quite the active little boy :-)

Sleep: still waking up several times a night to adjust my position and get comfortable but the snoogle is really helping keep me comfortable

Symptoms:  some back and abdominal pain as baby is growing; dry itchy skin

How I'm feeling: I've been more tired with some longer days at work recently... the OB has been pressuring me to only work 8-9 hours a day max but with the new computer system being implemented in less than 70 days (10 weeks from yesterday actually) we are all really feeling the crunch and some days just have to be longer than that... I do try to sit down when I can and put my feet up when I'm in my office but overall I am definitely noticing how I feel when I'm putting in the extra hours

What I Miss: nothing new... red wine, sushi

Cravings: nothing specific

Best Moment(s) of the Week: this was not a particularly fabulous week but it was very cool the other night to see the baby move from the outside :-)

What I am Looking Forward To: I don't know if I am looking forward to it exactly but I need to get all the clothes we got sorted and pick some of it to wash along with all the other stuff (bedding, swaddler blankets, etc...) it is all just sitting in the nursery on the floor right now so that needs to be addressed - maybe next weekend... :-)

24w4d
Maternity Clothes:  wearing them exclusively - bought a few new tops at Target to help out my dwindling wardrobe

Gender: baby boy

Movements: kicks/bumps getting stronger every day - sometimes when he kicks me it is shockingly strong

Sleep: still waking up several times a night to adjust my position and get comfortable - also the dreams are still very strange

Symptoms:  some back and abdominal pain as baby is growing; dry itchy skin

How I'm feeling: good overall - more tired than in previous weeks

What I Miss: nothing new... red wine, sushi

Cravings: curbed my Arby's craving while home in Indiana so that is good - still loving apple juice - that's about it

Best Moment(s) of the Week: seeing baby boy on ultrasound again on Tuesday :-)  He is awfully cute if a bit stubborn; still didn't get a great profile shot but here's what we got.  We also went to buybuy baby and bought a pack and play with a changing station and bassinet so that will be nice to have downstairs for naps and changing purposes.  We have gotten so much great stuff for this little guy - he is spoiled already :-)

in case you were wondering, that is his foot above his face... quite the acrobat we have :-)
What I am Looking Forward To: getting things more set up in the nursery now that we got a bunch of stuff at the baby shower

a post about food

So B and I made an awesome dinner last night. The quinoa was so good that I ate left overs tonight for dinner even without the salmon.  I am really becoming a fan of quinoa... it is really healthy - lots of protein and quite delicious in lots of recipes.

Anyway, this photo and my leftovers photo got lots of praise so I thought I would do the right thing and post the recipe for the quinoa here on the old blog.  Trust me it is worth the time to make it - it is fantastic :-)

So without further ado, I present:

Quinoa with Butternut Squash Spinach and Dried Cranberries
olive oil spray
3cups (1/2 large) butternut squash diced into 1/2 inch cubes
1tsp salt
1/2tsp black pepper
1shallot diced
1garlic clove pressed
2tbsp olive oil
2cups washed spinach
1/2cup dried cranberries
1/4cup toasted pecans or walnuts
3cups cooked quinoa

Instructions:

First you have to roast the butternut squash:

- Preheat oven to 350 F

- Line baking sheet with aluminum foil or silpat
- Lay out squash and spray evenly with olive oil
- Season with salt and pepper
- Bake until tender for 30-40 minutes.

Next you need to cook the quinoa:
- Rinse 1 cup dry quinoa briefly by placing in a fine mesh sieve and running under cold water
- When all water is drained heat about a tablespoon of oil in a skillet and add quinoa, toast until golden
- Add 2 cups of liquid (I used chicken stock but veg stock would also work or even water although I think using stock adds more flavor) to the quinoa and bring to a boil
- Once liquid comes to a boil reduce heat and cover, simmer until all liquid is absorbed and then fluff with a fork

Finally you just put everything together:
- Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a pan over medium heat and cook shallots and garlic for 3-4 minutes until shallots become translucent
- Add spinach and cook for 2-3 more minutes
- In the same pan (or in a bowl) add roasted butternut squash, cranberries, and quinoa (if you have let the squash sit and it is no longer warm I recommend adding it back into the pan rather than a bowl to re-heat it)
- Stir to combine and top with toasted pecans or walnuts (if that is your style... personally I left the nuts off of mine as I am not a huge fan of them)

And that's it!  You have now made a most delicious side dish (or entree depending on how hungry you are).

24 weeks

How far along: 24 weeks

Size of baby: About the size of a canteloupe; roughly a foot long and weighing in between 16-21 ounces

Total Weight Gain/Loss: back to "normal" I would say - just a little under my pre-pregnancy weight at this point and working to just eat as healthy as I can

How I'm Changing: bump is really growing - I swear sometimes I think it grows overnight... the photos below are less than a week apart and I definitely feel bigger now
22w5d
super cool work bathroom selfie... 23w3d
Maternity Clothes:  wearing them almost exclusively... some of my non-maternity shirts still work (see above) but the numbers are dwindling

Gender: baby boy

Movements: kicks/bumps getting stronger every day and B could feel "tiny bumps" from the outside a few days ago :-)

Sleep: ok but waking up several times a night to adjust my position and get comfortable - also the dreams are seriously strange

Symptoms:  some back and abdominal pain as baby is growing

How I'm feeling: good overall but tired

What I Miss: nothing new... red wine, sushi

Cravings: Arby's roast beef sandwich... fortunately I am in Indiana this weekend where I can get such things :-)  (the closest Arby's to my home in New England is 26 miles away... what the heck?!)

Best Moment(s) of the Week: Brian and I had a really nice day off together on New Year's Day and although I am sad that I didn't get to spend Friday with him too I am looking forward to seeing lots of friends/family at the shower today!  Definitely enjoying spending some time with my mom and sister this weekend as well.

What I am Looking Forward To: looking forward to our ultrasound on Tuesday - I bet this little guy is just even cuter than last time I saw him
